State Game 2: WR 9U Blue 21, Winterville 0

Winterville and West Raleigh Blue have a long state tournament history together. The first meeting came in the 2012 7U state title game, and then the two teams met twice in the 2013 state tournament. This year’s meeting came in front of hundreds of fans and hundreds of thousands of bugs in the second game of state tournament pool play in Snow Hill.

This time, 9U Blue brought the bats, hammering 14 hits in four innings in a 21-0 victory. Part of the credit for the offensive explosion has to go to Chick-fil-A, which fueled over half the team between games. But wait—they didn’t make any money on it. After some direction by the Gallaher girls, this was the scene as 9U Blue racked up even more free food:

It’s probably not a coincidence that all five of the pitchers who combined on a no-hitter against Winterville are shown in the above photo. As soon as Saturday’s starting pitcher is identified, we will deliver his spots and cow noses directly to him.

Friday’s 2-0 record means West Raleigh can clinch the top seed in the pool with a victory over Roanoke Rapids on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Game 2 Blue scoring plays

Joey beat out a grounder to short and Elias singled. Asher’s fielder’s choice drove in Joey. Elias scored on a wild pitch.
Score after one-half inning: WR Blue 9U 8, Winterville 0

Second inning
With two outs, Blue put runners on first and second after a walk and fielder’s choice. Wild pitches scored Chace and Jake. Banks walked. Joey walked. Elias singled home Banks. Joey scored on a wild pitch. After a walk to Andrew and a passed ball that put Elias at third, Asher singled in Elias. Bryce singled in Andrew.
Score after one and a half innings: WR Blue 9U 14, Winterville 0

Third inning
Gavin walked and then, because he was hitting in Chace’s spot in the order, Brady was hit by a pitch. Jake singled. Banks lifted a sac fly that scored Gavin. Joey walked. Elias picked up his third straight single, scoring Brady. Andrew singled home Jake, and then Asher’s RBI groundout scored Joey, after which Coach Sean grabbed Elias, with the ever vigilant Winterville fans helpfully pointing out at maximum volume, “HE JUST GRABBED HIM THAT’S AN OUT YOU HAVE TO CALL THAT!”

Score after two and a half innings: WR Blue 9U 18, Winterville 0

Fourth inning
Gavin reached on a fielder’s choice, as did Brady. Jake smoked an RBI double. Banks smacked an RBI single, and Joey finished the scoring with an RBI single.
Score after three and a half innings: WR Blue 9U 21, Winterville 0

Pitching Performances
Joey fired a perfect first.

Brady picked up a pair of strikeouts in the second.

Ben worked a hitless third.

Andrew recorded an out in the fourth, and then Chace finished it up with a pair of bases loaded strikeouts.

Game 2 Web Gems
Elias made a diving catch in center field to rob the leadoff man in the second.
There wasn’t a huge opportunity for web gems, as six of the 12 Winterville outs were recorded by strikeout.
